ABOUT CAPOEIRA

Capoeira is not just a martial art - it is an afro-Brazilian art form that incorporates dance, music, theater and play, and which has, since its inception played a significant role in historical resistance and cultural self-expression. Capoeira combines technique and expression with incredible physical skill and rhythmic movements that captivate both participants and spectators.

The origins of capoeira date back to the 16th century when African slaves in Brazil whose daily lives were played out in violent and precarious  circumstances, developed the practice to train themselves physically and mentally. They built upon their African culture and traditions and developed a system that, over time, became a tool of resistance against oppression and injustice.

Capoeira has spread far beyond the shores of Brazil. From the streets of Salvador to Europe, Africa, Asia, and beyond, it is practiced in hundreds of cities around the world. Capoeira is recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity – a living tradition that continues to evolve, flourish globally, and nurture individual´s need for connection with themselves and more critically, with their communities. Lesa Meira

ABOUT THE CAPOEIRA ASSOCIATION OF ICELAND

The Capoeira Association of Iceland has been teaching and promoting capoeira in Iceland since 2014. We offer courses for all ages – from 3 year olds. The Capoeira Association of Iceland is a community where we focus on creating an open and accessible learning environment. Our students have the opportunity to develop physically, mentally and emotionally through the practice of capoeira, and also take active part in shaping and strengthening the community. We learn different styles of capoeira. Our goal, however, is to promote a deep knowledge of the history and journey of the art-form, and also to provide practitioners with the ability to adapt to all capoeira environments. In our teaching we channel the legacy of older masters who shaped the history of capoeira, as well as insights and methods of modern teachers from different backgrounds. The Capoeira Association of Iceland is part of an international collective called Maloca community, and works closely with capoeira schools around the world.
